Sunglasses are more than a fashion statement! They protect our eyes from the harmful effects of the sun!
WHY DO PEOPLE NEED SUNGLASSES? People need sunglasses for:
* Ultraviolet (UV) radiation protection – The sun’s UV radiation can cause cataracts; benign growths on the eye’s surface; cancer of the eyelid and skin around the eye; and many other conditions. Wide-brimmed hats and caps do not adequately protect the eyes, only blocking about 50% of UV radiation.
* Blue-light protection – Long term exposure to the blue and violet portion of the sun’s rays has ben implicated as a risk factor for macular degeneration.
* Comfortable vision – The sun’s brightness and glare interferes with comfortable vision and the ability to see clearly by causing squinting and watering of the eyes.
* Dark adaption – Spending as littles as 2 or 3 hours in bright sunlight can hamper the eyes’ ability to adapt quickly to nighttime or indoor light levels.
NOT ALL SUNGLASSES ARE THE SAME!! What to look for in sunglasses:
* Lenses that block 99-100% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation
* Lenses that screen out 75-90% of visible light
* Polycarbonate lenses are a must for sunglasses worn for potentially hazardous work or sporting activities. These lenses provide the greatest available impact protection.
* Wraparound frames provide added UV protection for bright environments.
Other Important Sunglasses Facts
** Sunglasses are necessary for ALL ages! Most UV radiation exposure occurs during childhood.
** Lens color or darkness is no gauge of the level of UV protection.
** Price is no gauge of UV protection or of lens quality.
** Polarized lenses combat reflected glare. They provide added comfort and better vision for driving or boating. However, polarization may not be the best choice for all activities.
** People should not only wear sunglasses when they are outdoors working participating in sports, or taking a walk, but also while driving in their car or running errands.
